Improving Your Climbing Grip

What can I do to improve my forearm strenth and my grip?

Hi Mike,

I am a new climber (2 months) and loving it.
I am an avid weight lifter, so my reach, strength, and light weight make it easy for me to conquer certain situations than others. But I must be relying on my hands way too much because my forearms and grip are giving out after just a few routes and it’s frustrating me. Any suggestions?

Chris

Thank you for your question. This is a very common problem among new climbers. I remember thinking that I could climb a lot longer than I was if only my forearms could keep up!

I recently got an email from Lukian who asked the same question you did. Here is the link to answers to emails on my website:

Another piece of advice I have is to keep your arms as straight as possible when you climb. This will allow you to use your skeletal frame more than your muscles. This helps me on the overhanging routes. I have noticed that the more I bend my arms the quicker my forearms and biceps tire.

Finally, the more you climb the stronger your climbing specific muscles get trained. Good luck, let me know if this helps or if I can do anything else for you!

Safe climbing!

Now it’s your turn – ask me a question eh?
